Mutual insurance schemes and social protection
Summary
On the basis of the available documentation, this study firstly examines the operation of two health micro-insurances: Bwamanda in Zaire and SEWA in India. Then it compares their respective advantages and limitations for improving access to health-care for excluded groups. Lastly, after analysing the viability of these health micro-insurance systems, the document proposes recommendations for increasing their efficiency. This document was written in the context of STEP Research Group on Civil Society and Social Economy in collaboration with the Centre for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn.
